Our “Pampa” joined the Marine Corps Nov 20, 1963, in Detroit Michigan. He left for boot camp two weeks later. He's a Hollywood Marine going through boot camp at MCRD San Diego Ca. (Yes, you read that right... he was a Canadian citizen who joined the Corp) He returned to Camp Pendleton Ca. for transfer overseas to Camp Schawb Okinawa where he joined the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion 3rd Marine Division. He spent 60 days training as a Recon Marine, and then moved on to Mount Fuji Japan for more Recon training. Charlie Company then was sent to Subic Bay in the Philippines for Raider School. They returned after several months to Camp Schawb where the Battalion was told they were headed to Vietnam. He landed May 7th at Chu Lai. Vietnam and was there just a short time before moving on to Da Nang and his final Duty Station Phu Bai. He ran Recon patrols under Mr. Dickie and Later with Mr. Huddleston. On Oct 23, 1965, while on patrol with 3rd platoon Charlie Co he along with Joe Hair, Bob Alsip, and Tom Anderson were wounded by a booby trap on hill 54. All the Marines survived their wounds. His rank at that time was L/Corporal and he was later promoted to Corporal. In late November 1965 he was transferred to San Diego Naval Hospital where he stayed until June 1966. In late June 1965 he was placed on Temporary Retired List and Returned to his home in Canada. The Marine Corps Retied him in 1969 because his wounds would no longer allow him to perform the duties of his rank.
