THE HISTORY BEHIND MILITARY SURPLUS

You have probably been to, or at least heard of an army navy surplus store; but do you know the history behind it? This article will dive you into the over 150-year history of military surplus.

If the name Francis Bannerman does not mean anything to you be sure to pay attention as it will. Bannerman is credited with creating the first military surplus company in 1865 which he named “Bannerman’s Army & Navy Outfitters”. Affectionately known as “Bannerman’s” the company was run from a store front in Manhattan where he built a surplus empire selling everything from cannons and Gatling guns to clothing and swords. Bannerman sold most of his items through a catalog in which he would ship the items worldwide. The company grew so much that he ran into the logistical issue of storing all his inventory, to cope with his growing stock of surplus Bannerman purchased an island in the middle of the Hudson River known as Pollepel Island. Sitting on 13 acres Bannerman built a concrete castle that allowed him the security to store most of his stock while leaving room for him to provide a nice house and living area for his family.

During WWI Bannerman helped fund the war effort with his extensive stock of ammunition and weapons, giving you an idea of just how large of an operation he was running at the time.

Bannerman’s Army & Navy Outfitters no longer exists; however, he shaped the industry that we now know today and paved a path for current Army Navy stores and their set up.
